How to Pick the Best High School Essay Topics
High school teachers are a little easier on their students than college professors are. That’s why they very rarely leave an essay topic open for students to pick on their own. Usually, high school teachers will present a list of essay topics for high school students to choose from. This list tends to have very strong ties with chapters in the text books or in the curriculum-selected readings. This makes it a little easier for the student to use their most recent notes or chapters from their selected readings.
How Do You Pick the Right Topics?
If you are a high school student who wants to pick the best high school essay topics that get you the best grades, do preliminary research on each. Take a look at each essay topic and search through your books for research material. Is there lots of information that you can use or are you struggling to find the right information?
If you do a little research on each topic beforehand, you can get a feel for how much you can take from the text books and for how many ideas you can get on the subject. While you are researching a topic, if you want to start writing notes and adding pieces right away about a topic then it’s likely a good one.
Is There a Way to Cheat?
Don’t try to cheat because likely your high school administrators and teachers already know all the tricks of the trade. There are no original ideas when it comes to cheating, because it has all been done and caught.
But that doesn’t mean that you cannot turn this situation to your advantage. If you are being graded on a curve, do a different topic that most of your fellow students are not doing. It will then be less monotonous for the teacher grading it and you’ll likely get a better grade.
It is also imperative that you do not do the same topic as the teacher’s pet or the best student. This is someone who always scores highly because the teacher will anticipate giving them the best grade. If you do the same topic as they do, you run the risk of scoring worse than they do.
While you are brainstorming ideas, look up the essays and articles online. They are going to have points in them that you may not have thought of yourself. Do not copy the essays but do look through them for the best ideas to put into your essay. It’s also sometimes better to know what your teacher wants you to say than what you actually want to put in your essay in order to get the best grade.
